Router Bit Definitions
|
Unclear on the differences between different styles of cutters? Here's a brief run down. (See our Carbide Cutters for more details.)
- SCREW-ON CUTTERS
- Her-Saf router bits are screw-on cutters unless they are specifically described as "solid shank". When ordering a screw-on cutter be sure you have an arbor. The screw-on design allows fast bit changing while maintaining settings. Screw off the dull cutter and screw on a new one (of the same size) without having to re-set for depth. The arbor remains in the chuck. All Her-Saf screw-on cutters have 1/4"-28 thread unless otherwise noted.
- ARBORS
- All Her-Saf arbors have 1/4"-28 thread. They are available in a variety of lengths and diameters. The arbors remain in the chuck of the router. There is no need to remove them when using screw-on cutters. It is important when changing cutters to make sure that the face and threads of the arbor are free of dust for better seating of the cutters.
- INSERT TOOLING
- Screw-on Insert tooling maintains diameter and plunge cuts. Available in 1/2" and larger diameters. Insert tooling saves money; replacement inserts are available for much less than the cost of sharpening, re-tipping, or purchasing a new cutter.
- V-CUTTERS
- The screw-on insert V-cutters are used on CNC machines for signs, relief work, and miter cuts. They can also be used to plunge cut. Available in standard and small body sizes. See specifications for details.
- "V" INSERT CUTTERS
-
- The standard V-cutters are available in the following degrees: 90°, 100°, 110°, 120°, 130°, 140°, & 150°. These use the
#INSERT-V30 inserts.
- "VS" INSERT CUTTERS
- The Small Body VS-cutters are available in all of the above degrees, plus a 60° cutter. The 60° cutter takes a
#INSERT-VS15/60 insert. All other VS-cutters use the #INSERT-VS15 inserts.
- "P" SERIES CUTTERS
|
- The "P" series style are single flute, cam ground, solid carbide cutters. The "P" series cutters can plunge cut. These cutters are stronger and have greater chip clearance and run cooler. They are idea for plastics, laminates, woods, and abrasive layered materials. They can cut plastic without welding. Limited small diameter sizes available.
- STRAIGHT FLUTE CUTTERS
- The straight flute cutters are available in a variety of diameters up to 3/8"+.030" (.406"). Not recommended for plunge cutting. Diameters 3/16" and smaller are solid carbide.
- REVERSE HELIX CUTTERS
- The reverse helix cutters have a downward cutting action which means less chipping and furring of many materials. Available in a variety of diameters from 7/16" (.437") and up. Can be used for mortising, dadoing, rabbets and grooves.
- EXTREME REVERSE HELIX CUTTERS
- The extreme reverse helix cutters have a more extreme downward shear. These are ideal for paper faced materials. Limited sizes available.
- DOVETAIL CUTTERS
- There are five sizes of dovetail cutters available. These are currently used on a wide variety of machines.
- LEFT-HAND CUTTERS
- Left-hand cutters are for special application purposes only! A left-hand cutter is only required if the router or spindle runs in reverse. When ordering a left-hand cutter be sure to order a left-hand arbor!
- KEYHOLE CUTTERS
- Our keyhole router bits are solid shank cutters. They are available in both wide and narrow head styles.
- T-SLOT CUTTERS
- Our T-slot router bits are solid shank cutters. The T-slot cutters are for manufacturing slat wall material.
This list provides simple definitions for our most common styles of cutters. See our Carbide Cutters for even more tooling options, with more detailed specifications.
